What to do if you are worried a child is being abused:

 

Are You worried or concerned

About anyone under 18

Who you think is being abused/ neglected/ exposed to 

domestic abuse

  And that the child and family need help and support  

Then please report your concerns as per the Child Protection Procedures.

All individuals working with children, young people and their families have a duty and responsibility to report any allegations or concerns of a child protection nature, which comes to their attention.  When such a concern is raised you should:

  • Discuss with your supervisor
  • Complete a written record
  • Log a child welfare concern and seek advice with the Safeguarding Children Service (formally known as the Child Protection Unit) on 01452 58 3636 during normal office hours.

We would like to ask that you try and ring us during office hours.  However if you have concerns about the immediate safety of the child or you believe a serious criminal offence has been committed please contact Gloucestershire Constabulary at any time on 0845 090 1234.       

In an Emergency please ring 999.

 

 

It is important to the child that you tell us about your concerns. We will:

  • Act responsibly

  • Take seriously each concern raised

  • If appropriate assess the needs of the child

Removing a child from their home only occurs as a last resort.

 

We ask that regardless of how you may wish to contact us, please give us a name and contact number.  We may well need to use this to contact you to clarify any details.  It may be possible to keep this information confidential under certain circumstances.  Without your details we will be unable to pursue your concerns any further.

 

We understand

  • that you may only be raising a concern

  • that you may be worried how this may impact you

  • that you may be worried how this may impact the child you are worried about

However please remember that it may be that one phone call from you could help safeguard the well-being of a child who maybe at risk and our staff are trained and ready to listen to your concerns.

 

If you believe a child to be at immediate risk of harm then please contact the police on 999.
