The Safeguarding Children Service

The Safeguarding Children Service (formally known a the CPU: Child Protection Unit) is a body independent of the other agencies that make up the GSCB and is part of the Children and Young People's Directorate.

The primary responsibilities of this Service are to convene and chair Child Protection Conferences, offer advice about child protection and child protection procedures and maintain the Child Protection Register.

Agencies ring the Safeguarding Children Service (01452 58 3636) to Log Child Welfare Concerns before making a referral with the Children and Families Help Desk (01452 42 6565).

Duncan Siret, the Safeguarding Children Manager, is responsible for the Safeguarding Children Service which combines the GSCB Training and Administrative functions.

The SCS aims to safeguard and promote the welfare and safety of children in Gloucestershire under the Children Act 1989 by performing the following functions:

  • Acts upon initial referrals received from professionals, practitioners, parents, carers, children and young people when they are worried or concerned about anyone under 18 or unborn babies being at risk from abuse, neglect or significant harm.

  • Acts on behalf of the GSCB to convene, chair, record and manage Child Protection Conferences in collaboration with the GSCB Serious Case Review Sub Committee.

  • The SCS maintains the Child Protection Register and deals with and monitors all enquiries to the register, including logging Child Welfare Concerns.

  • It provides the statistical information needed in order to evaluate and develop the services offered to children in need of protection.
