Annual Remembrance Day for 'Britain's Lost Women'
Tuesday 14th July marks an Annual Remembrance Day for 'Britain's Lost Women' those killed as a result of honour based violence/abuse.
This is a memorial day led by Cosmopolitan magazine and Karma Nirvana but is supported by a range of partners including national bodies.
The date has been selected as it was the late Ms Shafilea Ahmed's birthday (b. 14.7.1986). Shafilea was murdered by her mother and father in an honour killing in September 2003. Both of her parents were convicted.
This date also creates an opportunity to raise awareness of the issues of forced marriage and female genital mutilation. These are both safeguarding issues and can become more prevalent over the school summer holidays. It is everyone's responsibility to safeguard individuals from harm.
